The Public Interface Software of the National Digital Library

News: 1.9.2010 Ex Libris Group chosen to implement National Digital Library´s Public interface

The National Digital Library is one of the projects under the Ubiquitous Information Society (Arjen tietoyhteiskunta) set up to implement the Government resolution on the objectives of the National Information Society Policy for 2007-2011. The project also implements the guidelines set by the EU on the key role of cultural heritage materials, scientific knowledge and research materials in the information society.

The National Digital Library project will create a national access point, the Public Interface for libraries, museums and archives to make their information resources accessible to the end- user. The National Digital Library and Europeana are working in close collaboration. Collaboration will ensure that the essential materials in Finnish libraries, museums and archives will also be available through Europeana and those available through Europeana will also be available through the Finnish Public Interface.

In the National Digital Library project, initiated by the Finnish Ministry of Education and Culture, the National Library is responsible of the acquisition of the public interface for the libraries, museums and archives. CSC is administering the procurement project by mandate of the National Library of Finland.


Procurement

Scope of the Procurement


The scope of the procurement is to find software for implementing a web-based public interface as the primary access point to the electronic resources of libraries, museums, archives and other information suppliers.

This front end system utilises metadata from the back end systems. The system should also provide an integrated interface to services of the back end systems. Such systems comprise of library systems, archival systems and museum collection management systems, long term preservation systems and a metasearch service.

The objective is to implement most of the required functionality without customised software, but programming services will be an option of the tender.

Delivery includes software licenses, piloting, installation, training and a support contract valid until further notice, unless otherwise agreed.

The procured software will be evaluated through a pilot test.
